About Kypseli, the area around Beehive Apartments

Kypseli is one of the most urban areas of Athens with a close connection to the arts, seen through the eyes of a bohemian youth culture but also through the lens of the vintage sensibility of the area. It is very close to the centre of Athens and is especially welcoming for visitors who want to have a great time getting to know the city.

Kypseli (which means Beehive!) developed from a picturesque countryside community in the 1930s when Art Deco and Bauhaus buildings were first built, and over the next three decades, it grew to become a vibrant hub attracting artists and intelligentsia. As the suburb became more dense, the elite of the suburb migrated to outer areas, and Kypseli went through a period of degeneration. Slowly, migrants from various backgrounds started weaving a rich fabric of multiculturalism, and post-economic crisis, the area began experiencing a period of urban renewal. Unique shops, multicultural restaurants, trendy cafes and vibrant nightlife are now a fixture of the neighbourhood, intermixed with picturesque town squares and boulevards, local artisan markets, and edgy street art.
